WHOIS Lookup
Query WHOIS registration data for any domain. Find registrar, creation date, expiry, nameservers, and registrant information.
Understanding WHOIS
WHOIS is a query-response protocol used to look up information about domain name registrations. When a domain is registered, the registrar collects contact and administrative data and makes it available through the WHOIS system. This data is stored in distributed databases maintained by registries and registrars worldwide.
What Data Does WHOIS Contain?
A typical WHOIS record includes the domain name, registrar name, registration and expiry dates, nameserver information, and registrant contact details. Due to privacy regulations like GDPR, many registrars now redact personal contact information and offer privacy protection services that replace the registrant's details with proxy data.
Registrar Information
The registrar is the company through which the domain was registered (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare). The WHOIS record shows the registrar's name, IANA ID, and abuse contact information.
Registration Dates
WHOIS records include the Created Date (when the domain was first registered), Updated Date (last modification), and Expiry Date (when the registration expires). These help determine domain age and renewal status.
Nameservers
The authoritative nameservers listed in the WHOIS record indicate which DNS servers are responsible for resolving the domain. Changes to nameservers can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally.
DNSSEC
DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) adds a layer of authentication to DNS responses. The WHOIS record indicates whether DNSSEC is enabled (signed) or not (unsigned), helping verify that DNS responses haven't been tampered with.
Common Use Cases
- Domain availability research -- Check if a domain is registered and when it might expire for potential acquisition.
- Security investigations -- Identify the owner or hosting provider behind a suspicious domain used in phishing or malware campaigns.
- Brand protection -- Monitor registrations of domains similar to your brand to detect potential trademark infringement or typosquatting.
- Due diligence -- Verify domain ownership before purchasing a domain or entering into a business relationship with a website operator.
- Technical troubleshooting -- Confirm nameserver configuration and registration status when debugging DNS or domain transfer issues.
- Competitive analysis -- Research when competitor domains were registered and which infrastructure they use.
WHOIS Privacy and GDPR
Since the implementation of GDPR in 2018, many registrars redact personal information from public WHOIS records for domains registered by individuals in the EU. This means fields like registrant name, email, phone number, and address may show as "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" or display proxy service information instead. ICANN's Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is gradually replacing traditional WHOIS and provides a more structured, privacy-aware approach to accessing registration data.
